Daksha - Son of Lord Brahma
Brahma, the creator of the universe, created DakshaDaksha
Brahma, the creator of the universe, created Daksha from his right thumb... from his right thumb. He was a great king and one of the Prajapatis (a group of Hindu deity taking care of procreation and protection of life, also known as the King of Kings). He was a staunch devotee of Lord VishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,.. (one of the Supreme Hindu Gods, also known as the Preserver).
Appearance and Personality
He is a Brahman (the upper most caste in Hinduism, the people belonging to this caste are considered to be the most learned ones). He wears a janeu (a sacred thread worn by Brahmans around their chest). Ornaments made of tulsi (the holy basil) beads are worn by him. He is a round and obese man with a bulky body and protruding belly.
He was a strict king and wanted his subjects to be faithful to him. His rules were to be followed by gods, sages and humans alike as he was full of ego and pride. Anyone disobeying him was completely rejected and hated, two such examples are of ShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ... and Soma (The moon God), who were both his son-in-laws.
Daksha had numerous daughters but he was a very protective father and loved all of them equally and he expected the same from his son-in-laws. Twenty seven of his daughters were married to Soma and Daksha asked him to make a promise of loving each daughter equally, without any favoring. Soma, though made the promise but was unable to keep so. He preferred one of the daughters, Rohini the most. As soon as this news reached Daksha, he was so angry that he cursed Soma of a slow and painful death. Daksha was so adamant that he ignored all the requests of his daughters of taking away the curse. Soma then prayed to Shiva and because of his intervention, the effect of the curse was reduced and it resulted into the waning and waxing of the moon.
Daksha never liked Shiva because he was an ascetic and his followers included ghouls, goblins, ghosts and demons. Because of his interference in the family matters, the hatred of Daksha towards Shiva became stronger. It is also believed that once there was a meeting of all the expounders of Vedas Four ancient texts constituting the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism(the sacred scriptures of Hindus) and many Gods and sages were present their including BrahmaBrahma
According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)... and Shiva. When Daksha entered, everyone paid their respect to him by standing but Shiva didn’t, thus gaining more hatred from Daksha.
Sati, Daksha’s youngest daughter was in love with Shiva and wanted to marry him only. Despite all the arguments given by Daksha, she didn’t agree with her father. In her swayamvar (a ceremony in which bride can choose her husband from various men gathered), she put a garland in Shiva’s neck thus choosing him as her husband. Daksha was unable to do anything in that moment but later to show his anger he organized a grand feast in which every god, demi-god, sage was invited except SatiSati
The name Sati means true and justifying her name... and Shiva. Sati still decided to go and ask her father about the insult he had caused her and her husband. In the feast, Daksha insulted her again and unable to bear the shame she jumped into the sacrificial fire. When Shiva was informed about the same, he decapitated Daksha’s head and his followers ruined the feast and yaga (ceremony performed for wealth and prosperity). Shiva was later pacified by Vishnu. Eventually, unable to find Daksha’s human head, Shiva replaced it by the head of a ram. Daksha later regretted his act and became a devotee of Shiva too.
