Narada told both the parties to prepare for the wedding on a particular day at midnight as it was an auspicious time. Shiva left his abode to reach Kanyakumari and not to miss the auspicious time. Narada then took form of a cock and falsely heralding the break of dawn. Confused Shiva thought that the auspicious time was over and thus returned back. He was disappointed and so was Devi Kanya Kumari.
Feeling disheartened as Shiva didn’t arrive to the venue, she threw away all the food prepared for the feast. She also decided to remain a virgin forever. Meanwhile Banasur heard about her beauty and decided to marry her. But the goddess rejected his proposal. He then tried to win her by force. He took out his arms. She was also ready with her divine discus with which she killed the demon. Before dying, Banasur realized his mistake and requested absolution for all the harmful acts he has done in the past. The goddess was filled with compassion and said that when he would take bath in the waters of Kanyakumari, he would achieve absolution. This boon was granted to him and is applicable for all the people who take bath in these waters.
Some devotees consider her as Bhadrakal Bhagavathy and recite the following Mantra A group of sacred words chanted in order to gain something, be it materialistic pleasures or peaceful mindwhile praying to her.
