Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,.. (One of the Supreme Gods of Hindus, also known as the Preserver). He came on earth to take revenge of the death of his father, Sri Savai Bhoj and also to establish his own cult. He was an ancient Gurjar warrior. Though Gurjar is a pastoral agricultural ethnic group but they are also known for their fighting spirit and battle skills.
Birth and Life
Devnarayan was born to a Gurjar couple, Sri Savai Bhoj and Sadu Mata Gurjari, in 911 A.D, on the seventh day of the month Magha (January-February), according to Hindu calendar. Sri Savai Bhoj was the most courageous of 24 Gurjar brothers who fought against Rana, a warrior trying to take over the Ran city in Rajasthan.
Sadu Mata was once visited by a mendicant who was begging for alms. She has just completed performing her ablutions and bathing but still she didn’t turn the mendicant empty-handed. Impressed by her devotion, the mendicant appeared into his real form, he was God himself and asked her to ask for a wish. She wanted God to be born as her own son and he promised to do so. When Sri Savai Bhoj died in the battle, Sadu Mata performed severe penance and asked God to fulfil her wish. After eleven days, infant DevnarayanDevnarayan

As he grew up he gained knowledge about what had happened to his father and against the wishes of her mother, Devnarayan decided to go back to his father’s ancestral home and fight for his right. Devnarayan, with his cousins, launched an assault against Rana. Devnarayan first released his herd of 980,000 cows and buffaloes in his fields to ruin the crops and then beheaded him with his bow-string. Rana is later revived and given back his life and he establishes the city of Udaipur. After the revenge is taken, Devnarayan decides to depart to heaven. One of his wives named Pipalde requests him to bestow him with a son before going and hence Bila is born. Earlier he denied to accept his father’s divinity and authority as he was egoistic but soon after he realized his mistake he came to be known as the first priest of Devnarayan. He looked after his father’s shrine and thus a place to worship Devnarayan was established.
Phad is a scroll filled with paintings depicting various episodes of the life of Devnarayan. It is a mobile temple that is carried by Bhopas, the priest-singers. The phad contains 335 songs and 15,000 verse lines and a professional Bhopa remembers all the songs by heart. He is invited in the villages of Rajasthan where he sings different episodes with the help of a helper who holds the lamp and shed light on the ongoing part in phad. In phad the image of Devnarayan is grand. He is depicted in the attire of king seated on a python throne. No place in the phad is left vacant. The borders are decorated by geometrical designs and any empty space is filled with trees and animals. It also includes figures of Hindu Gods like RamaRama
