Dhruva - The Pole Star
Dhruva was the son of a king named Uttanapada and his wife Suniti. At a very early age, he started performing penance and was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. He turned out to be a just king and because of a boon he obtained, he turned into a star, known as the pole star. He gained a permanent place in the sky and also had the boon of guiding the people who lose their way on their journey. Just like DhruvaDhruva
Dhruva was the son of a king named Uttanapada and his wife... found his destination i.e., he wanted to be in the memory of Vishnu, similarly he leads men to their destination.
Legend of Dhruva
Uttanapada had two wives, one was named Suniti and the other one was Suruchi. The King was much in love with the latter as she was more beautiful and she knew how to manipulate. Suruchi and her son Uttama were always given better treatment whereas Suniti and Dhruva were always ignored. Suruchi was always jealous of Dhruva as he was the legal heir of the kingdom, being the elder son.
Once Dhruva was sitting in the lap of his father, when Suruchi came and asked him to set down. She claimed that the Dhruva’s place was not in the lap of Uttanapada as only Uttama had the right to sit there. If Dhruva wanted a place then he should ask God and only God can allow him that privilege.
Dhruva was extremely hurt and went back to his father. He asked her if there was anyone who could provide him the comfort that the lap of his father gives. Suniti was a simple and kind lady who told her son that he could always find comfort in Vishnu. At the early age of five, Dhruva was all set to seek Vishnu. On the advice of sage Narada, he learnt a Mantra A group of sacred words chanted in order to gain something, be it materialistic pleasures or peaceful mindi.e., OM it is a sacred sound, which is meditated upon and considered as a spiritual icon by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. It is the primordial sound which is considered infinite, all encompassing, the truth of existence, the ultimate reality of the universe, the cause of life and the ultimate reality of being. It is the finest essence of life which helps in gaining the knowledge of self and the universe. Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. NaradaNarada
Narada, also popularly known as Narada Muni, is a great Vedic sage and is one of the most significant and iconic characters of the Hindus. told him that this mantra would keep him safe and alive.
Dhruva started his penance and for six months, he didn’t consume anything. He was determined to seek his rightful place and his determination knew no bounds. His austerity was being talked about in all the three worlds and finally VishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,.. decided to pay him a visit. Dhruva already had an image of Vishnu in his heart and he was so dedicated to the image that he didn’t open his eyes even when Vishnu himself was standing in front of him. Vishnu magically caused the inner vision to disappear because of which Dhruva finally opened his eyes.
As soon as he saw Vishnu in front of him, Dhruva couldn’t utter a single word. Vishnu then touched his right cheek with his conch and that sparked off his speech. When Vishnu asked him what his desire was, Dhruva claimed that he was an ignorant, uneducated child and only wanted some knowledge so he could sing or write hymns in the praise of the Lord.
Vishnu was surprised as everyone of his devotee had either asked for wealth or fame or power or salvation but here was a selfless kid who had no personal desire. He only wanted to praise Vishnu and be a part of his memory. This selflessness gained him eternal peace and eternal place in the heavens as a star. He was made a celestial being who was unaffected by anything and whose existence was prominent even after the end of the universe. He gained Dhruva Pada.
He soon returned to his kingdom where he was welcomed by his family and his people. His father was proud of him and made him the king at the age of six.
