Draupadi (Wife of Five Pandavas), also known as Krishna, because of her dark complexion, is the daughter of Drupada, king of the land Panchala. She was born out of the fire, with her brother, thus also called Yajnaseni. She is the main female protagonist of the Hindu epic, Mahabharata. She was known for her beauty and her nature. Though she was of dark complexion, she had lotus-eyes and long hair. She was also known for her strong determination and turned ferocious if the situation demanded. On the other hand, she was full of compassion.
Swayamvar is a ceremony in which many suitable men are gathered and the bride chooses her groom based on the skills and charm of the men. Draupadi’s beauty was talked about everywhere and she had many suitors, thus her father arranged for a swayamvar. The task for gaining Draupadi’s hand in marriage was to pierce the eye of a wooden fish, placed as a target on the ceiling, but only looking at its reflection in the water. Draupadi and Duryodhana
Draupadi was living in the ‘Palace of Illusions, in Indraprastha. Duryodhana, the eldest brother of Kauravas They were the descendants of Kuru. Duryodhana was considered the most important Kaurava. They were hundred in number and had only one sister named Dushala. They were parented by Gandhari and Dhritarashtra. They fought against the Pandavas in the war of Mahabharata. They also didn’t want the Pandavas to rule and thus also sent them into exile.
(sons of blind king Dhritarashtra) couldn’t differentiate between glass and water and fell into a pool. Draupadi insulted him by remarking that he is the blind son of his blind parents. This infuriated Duryodhana and he desired to attain both the wealth and wife of Pandavas. With his maternal uncle, Shakuni, he played a game of gambling with Pandavas and it resulted them in losing everything along with their wife. She was then dragged in the court and insulted in front of everyone, including the elders of the family and society. Draupadi was then asked to sit on the thigh of Duryodhana and to accept her position as a slave. Rejecting to do so, she was then disrobed but with the intervention of Krishna, she managed to keep her body covered.
Draupadi, along with her husbands, was sent into twelve years of exile and one year of anonymity but promised to take revenge of her insult. She decided to tie her loose hair after one of her husbands kill Duryodhana and bring his blood to wash her hair.
This ultimately led to the Mahabharata, the great war, between Pandavas and Kauravas in which all the five sons of Draupadi died but her husbands did win it. Her husbands then retired from the world and decided to take the journey towards heaven. Draupadi accompanied them and her devotion to them became eternal.
