Maharishi Dadhichi, also popularly known as Maharshi Dadhyancha, is regarded as one of the most important sages in Hinduism. is considered to be son of the great sage Atharvan, also known as Bhrigu Rishi, who wrote Atharvaveda, one of the four Vedas Four ancient texts constituting the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduismof the Hindus. And as such his son Maharishi Dadhichi was also a very wise, righteous and powerful sage. Maharishi Dadhichi is revered and honored for his pivotal role to save mankind all over the world.
A very famous legend associated with Maharishi Dadhichi states that he was a master of a special art known as Brahma Vidya. It is believed that by virtue of this art one was able to become immortal. Indra, the king of gods, perceived it as a threat to his position. It is believed that Indra was also against Ashwini twins, who are regarded as the gods of medicine, and decided to behead the one who would teach them the special art of immortality. The twins got to know about the intentions of Indra and they secretly devised a plan. They learned the Brahmavidya from Maharishi Dadhichi covertly. After that they took the head of Maharishi Dadhichi and preserved it carefully and replaced it with the head of a horse on his body. According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)... Vidya, he beheaded the horse headed sage and left. After that the Ashwini twins replaced the original head of Maharishi Dadhichi and revived him with the Brahma Vidya.
Later, a powerful demon Vritra became a serious threat for everyone. Vritra had the boon that he could not be killed by any weapon till date. The demon was regarded as the personification of droughts and as such he took all the water from the world and kept it with him. This way he intended to kill all the humans and Devas out of thirst and hunger. He even dethroned Indra and threw him out of the heaven. Indra and the Devas then approached VishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,.. for help. Vishnu then told them to visit Maharishi Dadhichi and ask him for his spinal cord for it would help Indra in forging a special weapon known as Vajra It is a Sanskrit word which means thunderbolt as well as diamond. Hence, it is the name given to a ritual weapon which is both indestructible and strong like a diamond, and irresistible like a thunderboltto kill the demon. Indra then approached Maharishi Dadhichi and prayed to him and narrated the whole story to him. He requested him to give him his spinal cord for making Vajra. Maharishi Dadhichi then agreed to help Indra and the Devas. Upon this Maharishi Dadhichi’s wife Swarcha rejected the request and started crying loudly. Maharishi Dadhichi then told her that his sacrifice was necessary as it would help and protect the gods and mankind in the world. He then told Indra that he had only one wish before giving up his life. He said that he wanted to visit all the holy rivers for pilgrimage before dying. Indra then called upon all the holy rivers on one location at Naimisharanya, Uttar Pradesh. Hence, Maharishi Dadhichi’s wish was fulfilled after which he started meditating and eventually gave up his life and spinal cord for the gods. Indra then forged the ultimate weapon Vajra with Maharishi Dadhichi’s spine and killed the demon. Finally, all the water of the world returned to its original state and the mankind and Devas were saved because of the sacrifice of Maharishi Dadhichi.
A very famous temple associated with Maharishi Dadhichi is the Naimisaranya Temple at Naimisharanya near Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that Maharishi Dadhichi was the first person to leave the yajna of Daksha when he realized that ShivaShiva
