    one of the Sun deities. The name Pushan has been derived from a Sanskrit word ‘pusyati’ meaning cause to thrive. Therefore Pushan causes people to thrive, to prosper. He guides people towards wealth and prosperity. He is also known as the God of meeting. Thus he is prayed to whenever people go on journeys and they believe Pushan will bring them good luck. His domain is the road and he keeps the travelers away from all the troubles. He guards them from wild beasts and cruel men and protect them from being killed or exploited by bandits. Even the vehicle is considered to be blessed and no harm will come to it too. Thus, assuring a safe journey and a safe arrival. 

     

    Depiction

     

    Pushan is depicted with braided hair and a beard. He carries a lance signifying activity. He is a kind God who is always working in the favor of people, cattle and souls. He provides wealth, rich pastures and right path to them respectively. He is drawn by goats and as a cowherd, carries an ox-goad.

     

    Pushan- God of marraige

     

    Marriages- A New Journey

     

    In Hinduism, marriages are considered an important journey undertaken by not only the two people getting married but also the families involved. Pushan is prayed to during the marriage ceremonies. He is believed to take the bride’s hand and bless her in the new union.  He is invoked for good luck to the newlyweds. He protects their happiness and promises a harmonious journey in the new life. 

     

    Pushan’s role – Escorting deseased souls to mortal world

     

    Immortal World

     

    Pushan’s role is beyond the mortal world. As soon as a person dies, his soul travels to the immortal world. This journey is also taken with the help of Pushan. He is considered a psychopomp, deities whose responsibility is to escort the deceased souls from earth to the heaven/hell or afterlife. He is the guide of the departed souls. 

     

    Pushan - God of Livestock

     

    God of Livestock

    Pushan is the protector and multiplier of cattle. He is responsible for the feeding of cattle and taking care of them. Many hymns are sung in his name to guard livestock and to find the lost ones. At times, he is depicted as driving the Sun and showing it the way. He is the God of all things moving and stationary. He assists in the revolutions and causes day and night. Sun is the source of every life and thus he enacts as the guardian and life inducer.
