Legend of Birth and Marriage
Rukmini was born to a king named Bhishmaka. As she grew younger, she turned out to be very beautiful and virtuous. She slowly started falling in love with Krishna as she heard stories about him. She used to ask her maidens to tell her about Krishna’s virtues, charm and prowess.
Rukmi was the brother of Rukmini and was friend with Krishna’s enemy Jarasandha. The name Jarasandha is a Sanskrit word which translates to “the one who is joined by the demonessJara”. He was the king of Magadha and a worshipper of Shiva. However, due to his bitter rivalry with the followers of Krishna, he is considered as a negative character. He didn’t want his sister to marry Krishna and thus fixed her marriage with one his friends, Shishupala, who was also an ally to Jarasandha. After knowing about this plotting, Rukmini requested a friend to deliver a letter to Krishna, asking him to abduct her and elope. The plan was to take Rukmini during her visits to the temple and avoid any physical battle as she didn’t want her relatives to die. As soon as Krishna read the letter, he came to take Rukmini with him.
He picked her up from the temple as planned, but Rukmi soon reached out to Krishna and tried to kill him. His arrow couldn’t even touch Krishna. Krishna became furious and wanted to kill him but at the request of Rukmini, Rukmi was left alive. He was made bald though as the sign of his defeat. Since then Rukmi is considered as the God of shame and defeat.
Krishna took Rukmini to his hometowm, Dwarka where they got married with proper pomp and show.

But then in the process when she tried to flaunt her materialistic power, she couldn’t reclaim him. One the one side of the scale Krishna was sitting and on another was all her jewels. She then requested Rukmini to help and all Rukmini did was place a tulsi leaf (holy basil) and the scale weighted down. Thus proving that Krishna cannot be won with jewels but with pure and selfless devotion and love.

Rukmini is hardly worshipped with Krishna and this is because of a curse she bore. Rukmini and Krishna called Duvasa Muni, a sage, to their home for dinner. The sage was known for his anger and short temper. According to the etiquettes, the host should not eat or drink before his guests but Rukmini was feeling thirsty and asked her husband to help. According to Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu in one of.... river started to flow and Rukmini drank some water. Furious by this act, Durvasa cursed Rukmini that her name would not be taken with Krishna. Therefore they are not worshipped together.
