Also known as Saraniya, Sanjna and Sangya is the Goddess of clouds and dawn. She is the wife of Surya (Sun God)... is a Sanskrit word meaning surrender and as her name suggests, the Goddess surrendered herself for her family. Saranyu is also an adjective, meaning quick and fleet and is related with rivers and wind. Hence Saranya’s chief element is air and she governs the east direction. She is often associated with a Greek Goddess named Demeter who is the goddess of agriculture.
Saranya and Surya
Saranya was the daughter of the celestial architect named Vishwakarma. She was very fair and beautiful and as soon as she reached marriageable age, she was married to Surya. After few years of marriage she realized that it was becoming difficult for her with every passing day to stay with her husband because of the heat and glare he emitted. Her eyes started hurting and her fair complexion turned dark. She decided to leave her husband. She created Chayya, another woman in her own image as her shadow and left her behind to take care of her family and to raise doubts about her disappearance.
Years passed and one day Surya saw Chayya behaving badly with her foster son. It was then he realized that she was not his real wife. He confronted her and came to an understanding that Saranya was living in a forest and leading an ascetic life. He decided to go after her.
As soon as he reached the forest, he saw his wife had taken the form of a mare and himself took the form of a horse. He then tried to woo her. Looking at the efforts of her husband, Saranya finally gave in to his requests and decided to come back home. Vishwakarma was happy to see his daughter back but he was not ready to take the risk again. Thus he helped his son-in-law and reduced his glare, leaving him with only one eighth of his shine.

Saranya is considered to be very intelligent and themes like knowledge, learning, excellence and reason are related to her. It is believed that she governs the conscious part of our mind thus understanding of the concepts and learning new things are associated with her. One gains logical reasoning and skills from her and she proved her worth by intelligently leaving her replica behind in the house of Surya. Also her symbol is walnut which is in the shape of the brain thus proving her association with mind.
