Tripura Sundari - The Beautiful Goddess
Tripura Sundari is the compound of two words, ‘Tripura’ meaning three cities and ‘Sundari’ meaning beautiful. Such was the beauty of this Goddess that she was considered great beautiful Goddess (Maha-Tripurasundari). The three cities can be seen as seen as the gold, silver and iron city representing heaven, air and earth respectively. Or it can be the three states of being, i.e., body, mind and soul. She is epitome of truth, spirituality, religious devotion, patience and restoration. Tripura Sundari is also known as Rajarajesvari, meaning Queen of Queens as she is the embodiment of Adi Shakti, the female aspect of universe, also meaning power or strength that produces and sustains primordial cosmic energy. Lalita is also one of her names, meaning one who plays. The play is not in the general sense but for the Goddess, creation, sustenance and dissolution of the universe is just like a play for her. Such is her might and wisdom. She is also known as Shodashi, one who will always remain sixteen. It is believed that beauty is at its peak at this age and afterwards it keeps declining. So she is in her perfect form. She also suggests the sixteen types of desires faced by a humans.

After the death of Shiva's first love Sati, Shiva..., the Goddess of love, devotion and fertility, is also another form). She was dusky in color. Shiva called her Kali She is the embodiment of empowerment and a fierce aspect of the Goddess. She is black in her complexion and thus she is named Kali. She is the Goddess of time, power, change and destruction and is majorly worshipped in South India, Bengal and Assamin the presence of some damsels and they started teasing her with the same name, meaning one who is black. Disheartened, she left Shiva and went to perform strict penance so her dark complexion could be turned light. After a long time, when she returned home, she was unaware of the change. It was Shiva who saw her and was so amazed by her new found beauty that he named her Shodashi.
Legend of Bhandasura

The name Sati means true and justifying her name.... Kama, the God of love was given the task to instigate emotions in Shiva again. But Shiva soon got angry and turned Kama into ashes. As he stared at the ashes, it turned into a demon named Bhandasura. He was a demon who came into existence through the ashes of Kamdeva. The Love God was killed by Shiva and he cease to exist as soon as Shiva transformed him into ashes. From these ashes, a new being was born who was later killed by the Goddess Ambika. The ashes were brought into life by Ganesha who started playing with those ashes, made a demon and put life into it. When he came into existence, he behaved as a friend of Ganesha but later on, he was filled with so much of hatred and rage that he started creating havoc and inflicting atrocities.
So great was the demon’s power and might that he made the entire world his slave. Gods and sages then invoked Tripura Sundari and asked for help. She took numerous manifestations and then destroyed the demon. She later also forgave him and restored Kama back to life.
Tripura Sundari is a four armed Goddess, mostly depicted in red color. She holds a bow made of sugarcane representing sweetness, five arrows made of flowers signifying five senses, a goad representing repulsion and a noose stands for attachment. She is mostly worshipped with the help of a yantra, a geometrical figure and a Mantra A group of sacred words chanted in order to gain something, be it materialistic pleasures or peaceful mind(a group of sacred words), OM it is a sacred sound, which is meditated upon and considered as a spiritual icon by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. It is the primordial sound which is considered infinite, all encompassing, the truth of existence, the ultimate reality of the universe, the cause of life and the ultimate reality of being. It is the finest essence of life which helps in gaining the knowledge of self and the universe. Braam Breem Broum, Sah Bhudhaya Namah.
She is also associated with Shakta Tantric (mediating ritual) and it is called Sri Vidya. One attains knowledge, learning and spirituality who remains devoted to this Goddess.
The most famous temple devoted to her name is Tripura Sundari Temple located in Udaipur, Rajasthan. She is worshipped in the form of Shodashi and is made of stone which is red and black in color. Another temples are in West Bengal named Ma Tripura Sundari Devi Temple and in Madhya Pradesh named Tripura Sundari temple.
