About Vashista

Vashistha - A Renowned Sage

Saptarishis or the Seven Sages were the mind born sons of BrahmaBrahmaBrahma
According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)...
(one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus, also known as the Creator), also called Manasputra. Vashistha was one of the Saptarishis. He is also one of the nine prajapatis (group of Hindu deities responsible for procreation and protection). He is the author of various Hindu hymns, collectively known as Mandala 7 of the Rigveda (sacred Sanskrit scripture on Hinduism). He was also the owner and caretaker of Kamdhenu and its child, Nandini. (Kamdhenu and Nandini are the divine cows, also known as ‘cow of plenty’ as they can fulfill all the desires).

Vashistha’s Marriage

Vashistha was married to Arundhati, who is the personification of the constellation named Ursa Major. They together are considered as an auspicious symbol of marriage. Vashistha is also known by her wife’s name as Arundhari Natha meaning the husband of Arundhati. Priests also invoke them during marriage ceremony as they symbolize closeness and bring happiness and intimacy in a couple’s life.

Vashistha’s Ideals

Though he was a sage with extraordinary power, he was disinterested in material delights. He believed in the concept of spirituality, kindness, devotion and contentment. Brahma offered him the position of advisor for Surya Vanch (an ancient clan of India who bore the emblem of Sun). Vashistha rejected the position as he was neither interested in the power nor in its enjoyment. Only after he was told that Rama, incarnation of Lord VishnuVishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,..
(one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus, also known as the Preserver) was going to be born in this clan and he had to serve him, then Vashistha accepted the offer. He taught RamaRamaRama
As of late, in the year 2007, the idea of whether Rama...
the ultimate truth of life.

Vashistha’s Influence

Vishwamitra, one of the most venerated sages, was performing severe penance since years. He lived without food and water and weather didn’t bother him. After every thousand years Brahma kept giving him a higher status but he never stopped meditating. Finally Brahma with other Gods visited him and asked him what he wanted. He said that he wanted to be called a Brahmarshi (ultimate expert on religion and spiritual knowledge) by Vashistha because he was the learned in all the Vedas Four ancient texts constituting the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism(sacred scriptures on Hinduism). Vishwamitra was not initially a spiritual man. He wanted to attain Kamdhenu and enjoy the materialistic pleasures. He wanted to acquire power through penance but only by Vashistha’s influence, he started following the righteous path.

Vashistha and King Dileepa

King Dileepa belonged to Raghuvansha dynastry (lineage of solar deity, Surya). He, along with his wife, Sudakshina wanted a child and went to Vashistha for help. He asked them to pray and serve Nandini every day and save her from all the harm and she will bless them with a child. One day a lion wanted to attack Nandini but Dileepa offered his own life to save her. The lion soon disappeared without harming anyone and Vashistha then told them that the lion was just an illusion to test his dedication. Because of his selfless act, Dileepa was blessed with a son.
