After the death of Shiva's first love Sati, Shiva... who came on earth to defeat two demons named Jalandhara and Briga. He is worshipped by the low-status castes of central Kerala and is believed to provide protection and safety to them from all the troubles and unhappiness.
Shiva came on earth to hunt in a forest where he met a beautiful tribal girl named Koolivaka. He was so fascinated by her beauty that he wanted to make love to her he told her to wait till he returns from the hunt. Koolivaka was an ardent devotee of Parvati and did not want to anger her Goddess but on the other hand she didnt want to bear the wrath of Shiva. Thus she decided to pray to Parvati and ask for a solution.
Impressed by her innocence and dedication, Parvati decided to help her. She came on earth and met Koolivaka, also revealing her true identity. Parvati told her that in her previous birth, she was her attendant and was found breastfeeding her son, GaneshaGanesha
The guardian deity of Hindus, also known as the Ganapati (The God of all groups) is the son of Lord Shiva .... Parvati became very furious at this site and cursed Koolivaka that in her next birth she would be born in a low-caste family. But soon when Parvati's anger subsided, she blessed her to be able to breastfeed a son of Shiva.
Parvati then herself took the form of Koolivaka and sent her away. When Shiva returned from his hunt, he made love to pseudo Koolivaka and from this union, Chattan was born. He was given to the real Koolivaka to rear and Shiva provided him a buffalo for his protection. The child had divine powers and roamed about in the forest on his mount. He protected the villagers from all the external threats and thus he was praised by everyone.
On his seventh birthday, villagers decided to honor him and prepared a great feast. Sage NaradaNarada
Narada, also popularly known as Narada Muni, is a great Vedic sage and is one of the most significant and iconic characters of the Hindus. was also invited to the celebration. He realized it was time to tell the truth to Chattan about his noble birth and he revealed that his real parents were Shiva and Parvati who lived on Mount Kailash. Chattan decided to meet his parents and started his journey.
When he reached Kailash, NandiNandi
Nandi is one of the most iconic and famous characters of Hindu mythology. He is the vehicle of Shiva and also the gatekeeper of the abode of Shiva and Parvati. (Shiva’s mount) was standing outside and Chattan knew that he would not be given the permission to go inside. Thus he took the form of Vishnu, through his powers and went inside. Shiva and Parvati were happy to see their son and so proud they were of Chattan’s intellect that he named him Vishnumaya (one who took the form of Vishnu through magical powers). He was also told about his fate, the reason for his existence which was to kill the two demons.
Jalandhara was a demon who was terrorizing Gods and sages alike. Chattan decided to kill him and challenged him to a battle. The demon was terrorized and took refuge in a sea. Chattan took the form of Sudarshan Chakra (disc) and followed him everywhere. He started rotating above the sea and it created such immense heat that the water of the sea started to boil. Unable to take the heat any longer, he came out on the surface and was beheaded.
Chattan’s power was recognized by all the Gods and Vishnu offered him to stay in his palace but he returned back to his people saying that they needed his protection.
Another demon named Briga had attained a boon from BrahmaBrahma
According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)... that he could only be killed by the child of Shiva and a virgin tribal girl. Chattan fit in the boon completely. Briga tried to seduce Koolivaka and take her as his wife, forcefully. He came with his army and was even able to injure Chattan. From the injury dropped four hundred blood drops and from each rose a Kuttichathan (another form of Chattan). 400 Kuttichathans together killed the army and Chattan killed Briga.
Vishnumaya has a buffalo as his mount. He is depicted bare chested but ornamented with lots of gold jewellry. He also has a garland around his neck. He wears a blue dhoti (a traditional garment in India) and carries a kalash (water pot) in one hand and Kuruvadi (a short stick in another). He is sometime even presented with his musical instrument, Ezhara, in his hand which he loved playing as a kid.
