    Yakshini

    About Yakshini

Yakshini is the female counterpart of the mythical creatures and nature spirits called Yakshas. Together, they are the caretakers of the hidden treasures. They work under the Lord of wealth, named KuberaKuberaKubera
Kubera is the God of wealth & is known as Dhanpati ...
.They are also associated with fertility. The presence of these creatures is noticed in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

    Depiction

On one hand where Yakshas are depicted as dwarfs and grumpy, Yakshinis are depicted as beautiful creatures. They have voluptuous body. They wear garlands or necklaces made of beads and are in perfect shape and figure. They have the power to delight physical senses. They are mortal creatures and are stuck in the cycle of life and death but Yakshinis have the power of staying young forever. They can look as attractive and beautiful, as they want. They are perfect both in their bodies and capabilities. It is believed that they can fulfill all the desires. They have magical qualities and supernatural powers. They can be shape shifters too. Because of such powers, Yakshinis can be benevolent, if in good mood or can be malevolent, if unhappy or upset. Therefore a YakshiniYakshiniYakshini
Yakshini is the female counterpart of the mythical creatures and nature...
can be considered both, a fairy or a ghost.

In South India, especially in Kerala, Yakshinis are considered evil spirits, who drink the blood of men. One of the Yakshini named Mangalathu was in love with a man named Kunjuraman but he was already married. All her efforts to gain him did not give any result. Thus she decided to liquidate his wife. When Kunjuraman came to known about the truth, he strangled her to death. She again took birth as a beautiful Yakshini to obtain Kunjuraman. She killed many men after bewitching them and drank their blood. Kunjuraman agreed to be with her but only on the clause that she will have to be instilled in a temple after their one year of union. She agreed to the term and after one year, she was installed in a temple. Thus Kunjuraman freed the people from her horror. Many such legends are a part of South Indian history which makes Yakshinis a group of bloodthirsty and sinful spirits.

The three places where images and idols of Yakshinis are in plenty are Bharhut (a village in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh), Sanchi (in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh) and Mathura (a city in Uttar Pradesh). They are presented in their perfect figure, at the gates of temples, usually touching a tree branch either of an ashoka (Saraca indica) tree or sal tree (Shorea robusta).

    Yakshini Sadhana Tantra

Yakshinis are extremely powerful and influential. If they are prayed to and are rightly appeased, they can fulfill any of the desires one might have connected to the materialistic world. A large number of people who practice Tantra (another style of meditation), have complete believe in Yakshinis. There are 36 Yakshinis that are prayed to, to gain favors. This form of meditation should only be performed under a guidance of learned and spiritual teacher because even a slightest mistake in such ritual can be very devastating. If the rituals are performed successfully then it can lead to wealth, power and wisdom.

    Ways of Worshipping Yakshinis

If a Yakshini is worshipped as a mother then she bestows wealth and protection to her devotees. She nurtures them with tenderness and becomes the source of joy, love and compassion. If she is worshipped as a wife then she becomes the source of all the comforts. If worshipped as a sister then she provides protection, helps to win over any enemy and to overcome social pressures. If she is worshipped like a friend then she stands by the side of her devotee, even if he is wrong.
