  • Sri Aurobindo

About Sri Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo, known as Aurobindo Ghose was an eminent Indian nationalist, poet, yogi, guru and philosopher. He joined the Indian movement for independence from the British rule, became an influential leader and after a while served as a spiritual reformer introducing his vision on human progress and spiritual evolution.

Reformist

Aurobindo studied for the Indian Civil Service at King's College, Cambridge, England. After returning to India, he took up various civil service works under the King of the princely state of Baroda and began to involve himself in politics. He was imprisoned by the British for writing articles against British rule in India. He was released when no evidence was provided. During his stay in the jail he had mystical and spiritual experiences, after which he moved to Pondicherry, leaving politics for spiritual work.

Early Life

Aurobindo Acroyd Ghose was born in Calcutta (now Kolkatta), Bengal Presidency on 15th August 1872. His father, KrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
Dhun Godse, was the then assistant surgeon in Rangapur and a former member of the religious community, Brahmo Samaj who had been enamoured with the-then new idea of evolution during his medical days at Britain. His mother Swarlotta Devi was sent to most salubrious places to give birth to Aurobindo by her father, who was a leading figure of Brahmo Samaj.

Young Aurobindo was brought up speaking English but he used Hindustani to communicate with his servants. Although his family was Bengali, his father believed the Britain culture to be superior and therefore sent his elder two siblings to Loreto Convent in Darjeeling to raise them in an elite English way and distance them from their mother, who had lately developed a chronic illness.

Philosophy and Spiritual Vision

Aurobindo's concept of the Integral Yoga system is described in his books, The Synthesis of Yoga and The Life Divine. The Life Divine is a compilation of essays published serially in Arya.

Aurobindo argues that divine Brahman manifests as empirical reality through, or divine play. Instead of positing that the world we experience is an illusion, Aurobindo argues that life itself is Divine.

Aurobindo believed that Darwinism merely describes a phenomenon of the evolution of matter into life, but does not explain the reason behind it, while he finds life to be already present in matter, because all of existence is a manifestation of Brahman. He argues that nature (which he interpreted as divine) has evolved life out of matter and then mind out of life. All of existence, he argues, is attempting to manifest to the level of the supermind - that evolution had a purpose. He stated that he found the task of understanding the nature of reality arduous and difficult to justify by immediate tangible results.

Five Dreams

The five dreams of Sri Aurobindo were:

  • A revolutionary movement which would create a free and united India.
  • The resurgence and liberation of the peoples of Asia and her return to her great role in the progress of human civilization.
  • A world-union forming the outer basis of a fairer, brighter and nobler life for the spiritual gift of India to the world.
  • A  step in evolution which would raise to a higher and larger consciousness and begin the solution of the problems which have perplexed and vexed since first began to think and to dream of individual perfection and a perfect society.
