Bhimashankaray Namah! One of the 12 foremost holy shrines of Shivlingas is situated near Pune in Maharashtra, India. Here, the one of the supreme pilgrimage places is devoted to “Moteshwar Mahadeva” (Lord Shiva). Definitely, the sole junction as an appearance of Lord Shiva comes visible as a tale of religious place, millions of devotees from all over the country visit the primitive divine temple every year. Moreover, the holy place is also the source of the Bhima River (Chandrabhaga River).

History: Times of yore, according to the mythology, an evil Asura Bhima (who was very kind) lived with his mother Karkati on the snooty ranges of the Sahaydris in the Dakini forests. Once he demanded his mother to reveal the secrets of his life. Then she was unveiled to him that he was the son of Kumbhkarna, who was exterminated by Lord Rama (Lord Vishnu’s incarnation). Angered Bhima consecrated to avenge Lord Vishnu and practiced severe penance and worshipped Lord Brahma.

Moreover, Brahma was pleased and granted him massive competence. Bhima defeated Kamrupeshwar (devotee of Lord Shiva) and King Indra. Resultant, Lord Shiva soothed the Gods and decided to salvage them from Demon. On the contrary, Bhima expects Kamrupeshwar to worship him only. But, He refused then Bhima aroused his sword to hit Shiva Lingam.

Alternatively, Lord Shiva came along and cut down demon Bhima. All the Gods bespoke Lord Shiva to make this spot his domicile. Accordingly Lord Shiva evidenced himself in the appearance of the Bhimashankar Jyotirling.

Festivals and Fairs: Moreover, here come on the organized series of acts! The most significant holy festivals and fairs at Omkareshwar temple are – “Maha Shivratri” (celebrated in the month of February-March every year), “Shravan Mahotsava” (celebrated in the holy month of Shravan) and “Nag Panchmi” (on 5th day of the Karthik sud).

Besides, a grand fair -“Maha Shivratri fair” is held near the temple with the other significant rituals every year.

Other significant adjacent places: Here, several other momentous places and temples are situated near the Bhimashakar temple – Kamalaja Shrine (an incarnation of Goddess Parvati), Mokshakund tirtha (located behind the holy temple, allied with Rishi Kaushika) and Bhimashankar wild life sanctuary.

Temple timings: The holy temple opens at 4.30am and closes at 9.30pm.

First Aarti: Held at 5.05am

Maha Puja: Performed at 12pm

Second Aarti: Performed between 3.15pm to 3.30pm

Third Aaarti: Performed between 7.30pm to pm

How to reach: Bhimashankar is located approximately 128kms form Pune and 210kms from Mumbai.

By Air: Nearest airport is Pune (128kms).

By Train: Nearest railhead is located on the Pune-Mumbai section of the Central railway.

By Road: Bhimashankar is well connected by road to Pune (120kms), Mumbai (3150kms), Nasik (245kms) and Sangamner (59kms).
