Legends

Lakshmana is believed to be the daughter of Brihat Sena, king of the Madra Kingdom. In Mahabharata, a group of western kingdoms is known as Madra Kingdom. Sangala was its capital. Madri belonged to this kingdom who was the second wife of Pandu. Brahmins were not given much importance in this side of the kingdom. Women were much more powerful and enjoyed freedom in this region. was a very beautiful, shy and religious girl. When she grew up, the king thought of getting her married. However, he wanted to make sure that his daughter gets a husband who was really worthy of marrying a princess like her. According to the King, the worth of the person was not just merely about the riches and wealth of a person but also the skills and wisdom. So, to find the best suitable match for Lakshmana, the king organized a Swayamvar. In this ceremony, a test of skills was conducted, and all the participants were supposed to get their chance until one of them wins the competition and, eventually, the hand of the girl in marriage. The King organized an archery competition for this. Around that time, Krishna was with the Pandavas. All of them came to know about the Swayamvar. It is believed that Krishna wanted to marry the princess. Duryodhana and Jarasandha The name Jarasandha is a Sanskrit word which translates to “the one who is joined by the demonessJara”. He was the king of Magadha and a worshipper of Shiva. However, due to his bitter rivalry with the followers of Krishna, he is considered as a negative character.participated in the competition. However, both of them missed their targets. Arjuna, who was the best archer in the whole world at that time, participated as well. But somehow he got to know about the true feelings of Krishna towards Lakshmana and that he wanted to marry her. So, out of respect for Krishna, he deliberately missed the target. Bhima simply refused to participate out of reverence for the deity as well. Finally, Krishna took his turn and hit the bull’s eye. And as such, eventually, the king offered his daughter Lakshmana to Krishna for marriage.

stole the jar of Amrit The term ‘Amrit’ is used for the water or nectar of immortality. The word was used in Rigveda for the nectar which is drunk by Gods to gain immortality. It was one of the outcomes of samudra manthan. There was a curse on gods by Durvasa because of which they started becoming mortal and then they needed this drink for immortality. Later on the water which is given as prasadam to devotees in the temples is also called Amrit as it is believed to be blessed by Gods. It is the holy water which is sweet-tasting. It is consumed in the name of the God. from the gods. Moreover, it is believed that after their marriage Krishna took Lakshmana to Hastinapur It is a town in Meerut district, situated in Uttar Pradesh. The name Hastinapur, is a compound of two Sanskrit words, ‘Hasti’ meaning elephant and ‘puram’ meaning city. So the city is named after elephants. The place got its prime importance from the days of Mahabharata. The Kuru dynasty came into existence from this very place. It was the capital of Kuru dynasty. It is located on the banks of Ganga. All the Kauravas were born here. The two most ancient temples of this place are Shri Digamber Jain Bada Mandir which is a Jain temple whereas Pandeshwar temple is 7000 years old and is dedicated to Shiva. to meet the Pandavas and their wife, Draupadi. It is believed that when Krishna left the earth and gave up his life, all of his wives ended their lives as well. All the wives, including Lakshmana, immolated themselves in the funeral pyre of Krishna according to the ritual of SatiSati

Beliefs and Significance

Lakshmana is revered by all the followers of Krishna, who is one of the most important and popular deities of the whole world. However, there are no particular festivals or occasions dedicated to Lakshmana. Nevertheless, she holds a very significant place in the heart of Krishna as well as the people. Lakshmana symbolizes the simplicity, purity, religiousness and love one must cultivate in life.
