About Brihadeeswarar Temple

is one of the examples of major heights built during the Chola Kingdom in 1010 AD by Raja Raja Chola I. Temples from the same period and two following centuries are expressions of Tamils Chola power, artistic expertise and wealth. The glorious temple is located at Thanjavur in the state of Tamil Nadu dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is also popularly known by names like, Periya Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajeswaram. The Temple is covered under the UNESCO World Heritage Site also known as ‘Great Living Chola Temple’.
 

Historical Significance
The Brihadeeswarar Temple was originally built by Arulmozhivarman, popularly known as RajaRaja Chola I in 1010 AD in compliance to a command given to him in a reverie. Temples from this period and the following two centuries are an expression of the Tamiliars wealth, authority and artistic mastery. Brihadeeswarar Temple’s build was like one royal temple for displaying emperor’s vision for relationship and power to universal order. This temple was one site of primary royal ceremonies, such as anointing emperor and to link emperor with Shiva, its deity and deity’s daily rituals was a mirror of those by the King. The Temple is a perfect personification of the detailed Dravidian architecture, and Chola inspired ideology in the formation of paintings, bronze casting and sculpture.
 

The Deity
The ‘moolavar’ or the primary deity of the Brihadeeswarar Temple is Lord Shiva. All other deities particularly placed in the niches of the outer walls are larger in size like Dakshinamurthy, Surya, and ChandraChandraChandra

Architecture
The oriental architecture dedicated to Lord Shiva was built by Kunjara Mallan Raja Raja Perunthachanas described in the ancient texts found in the Temple. The Temple was built in accordance with the Vastu Shastras and Agamas. The main temple is entirely built of granite. More than 130,000 tons of granite is said to have been used to build it. A long associated myth with this temple is that the shadow of the main structure does not fall on the ground. However, this has been proven wrong by scientists. The statue of NandiNandiNandi
Nandi is one of the most iconic and famous characters of Hindu mythology. He is the vehicle of Shiva and also the gatekeeper of the abode of Shiva and Parvati. 
at the entrance of the temple is carved out of a single stone. The main Vimanam, which is at about 200 feet, is often called Dakshin Meru or Southern Meru. The inspiration to build the temple came to Raja Raja Cholan during his visit to Sri Lanka and is a result of a dream he had.
 

Millennium Commemoration
The glorious Temple completed 1000 years of significant existence on 26th September 2010, by serving the devotees and pilgrims all over the world and astounding them with the unique facets of architecture. To celebrate the grand 1000th year of the ancient structure, the State Government and various nearby towns held many cultural and joyous events. It was the 275th day of the 25 regal years that, Raja Raja Chola I handed over the gold plated kalasam for the final consecration to the Vimana. 
Commemorative stamps and coins
 

To mark the event on the 26th September 2010, the Reserve Bank of India issued a 5 Rupee coin featuring the model of temple embossed on it which was released by A.Raja, Minister of Communication and Information Technology. On April 1, 1954 the Reserve Bank of India issued a 1000 rupee coin featuring a panoramic view of the temple to mark it’s historical and cultural significance.
