The legend associated with the temple is that, once there was a rich and prosperous merchant named Durlabhsheth Pitambardas Mahajan. He was the moneylender to Peshwas.
Durlabhsheth was a staunch believer of Goddess Chaturshringi and visited all her temples everywhere. But as he aged, he was unable to travel for longer distance. His ailment restricted him from visiting the temples.
One night, Chaturshringi appeared in his dream of Durlabhsheth and told him that if he were unable to come to her, she would come to him and stay near him. She told him to visit a mountain situated in the North-West of Pune & dig there. Durlabhsheth traced out the place described by the goddess. Once he reached there, he miraculously found a natural statue of the Goddess Chatursringhi. Later, he constructed the Chaturshringi temple at that place. This temple got renovated from time to time.
Durlabhsheth started Chattushringi rupee to celebrate this occasion. With time, the temple became famous, and thousands of devotees started visiting the temple.
Late Dastageer Gosavi and his disciples became the caretaker after the Durlabhsheth. Later, it went to Angel family, and from last five generations of Angel family is performing all deity rituals like prayers, Naivedya, Arti, & other religious rituals till date.
