Dynasty in the year 1250 CE. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Sun and is known worldwide for it’s exquisite stone carvings. It is situated at Konark, Odisha. The temple marks the highest achievement of Kalinga architecture depicting the symbol of grace, joy and a wondrous delight! It is also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the year 1980 and was a part of several ‘Seven Wonders Of India’ list too. It is located at a village in Konark, around 35 km away from North Puri, on the coast of Bay of Bengal.
 

Historical Significance
According to Bhavishya Purna and Samba Purana, there have been ancient texts which provide evidence that the Konark sun temple also must have existed before the 9th Century.
advised by the sage Kataka to worship Sun God to cure and heal his ailments for life. Samba underwent penance for 12 long years near the shores of Chandrabhaga when Lord Sun, finally impressed by his devotion cured him of his ailments. Therefore, Samba built the Konark Sun Temple in honour of Sun God depicting a pure bonding and devotion towards the almighty!
 

Alluring Architecture
The Temple was originally built on the sidelines of Chandrabhanga shores but lately, the water has receded since then. The oriental architecture of the temple is praise worthy and spalls a cast on all the tourists from over the world. The temple is built in the form of a grand chariot with twelve big wheels or chakras elaborately carved on stone, 3m wide each and carried by seven horses. The Temple follows a traditional concept of Kalinga Architecture and is carefully oriented in a way that the morning sun rays strikes the principal threshold. The Konark Sun temple is built of Khondalite Rocks.
 

The Konark Temple belongs to the Kalinga School of Indian Temples with characteristic curvilinear towers mounted by Cupolas. The surfaces of the temple are carved with exquisite stone sculptures with a wide variety of subjects, including many erotic scenes based on the Kama Sutra. The beautiful image is carved of high-quality green chlorite stone and is one of the masterpieces of Konarak. Surya wears tall riding boots and is accompanied by a small figure of ArunaArunaAruna

, the charioteer, at his feet. A collection of fallen remains can be viewed at the Konark Archaeological Museum which is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Attraction: Some of the interesting places to visit near Konark Sun Temple are:
 

  • Mayadevi Temple: - To the west of the main temple are the remains of temple no.2 popularly called the temple of Mayadevi, believed to have been one of the wives of Lord Surya. But the presence of the sun images as parsvadevata in-situ indicates its dedication to the sun god, built earlier than the main Sun temple.
     
  • Vaishnava Temple:- The small brick temple facing east in south-west corner of the compound was discovered in 1956 during the sand clearance. Also called temple no.3 is pancharatha on plan. It consists of a deul and a Jagamohana but with the superstructure is missing and devoid of any exterior decoration

Temple Timing: The Temple is open from 6 am to 8 pm.
