The word Lingaraj literally is derived from Lingam, which is believed to be the iconic form of Lord Shiva. Therefore, Shiva was worshipped as Kirtivasa and later as Harihara He is the representation of Vishnu and Shiva fused together. He is considered as the supreme God by Vaishnavites and Shaivities. He presents the principal of oneness of all existence. They both are considered as one and same entity. They are a single entity of the Brahman. It is presented as an image or idol split down in half. One side represents Shiva with matted hair, pale skin with ash smeared forehead whereas the other half represents Vishnu with a half crown on his head and some jewelry. He is black-skinned and holiness is visible on his face.

The Lingaraj Temple consists of 150 smaller shrines in its courtyard. The Temple is divided into four parts namely, Garbha Griha, Yagna Shala, Bhog Mandap and the Natya Shala.

The temple has been built in the Deula style with four major components like Vimana, Jagamohana, Natamandira and Bhoga-Mandapa. The Dance Hall was associated with the raising prominence of the devdasi system that existed during the time.
According to the Hindu mythology, there is an underground river originating from the Lingaraj Temple and fills up a massive Bindusagar Tank, the water is believed to be sacred and heal the physical and spiritual ailments. Thus, the pilgrims and devotees every year take a dip in the holy water during special occasions.
Shivaratri is the main festival celebrated here with pomp and glory during the Phalgun month when thousands of devotees worship Lord Lingaraj. After observing a full day fasting, the devotees offer bel leaves to Lord Harihara and break their fast after the Mahadipa is rekindled with the flame of joy.
Every year, chariot festival is celebrated on Ashokaashtami where the deity is taken on the chariot to the Rameshwar Deula Temple.
