About Meenakshi Temple

The Meenakshi Temple is located on the southern banks of the Vaigai River, enormously dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Sundareshwara and his consort ParvatiParvatiParvati
After the death of Shiva's first love Sati, Shiva...
or Meenakshi.  It was originally built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the credit for building the entire Temple goes to the Nayaks. Nayaks, who ruled the city of Madurai from 16th to 18th Century, left majestic imprints in the construction of Meenakshi-Sundareshwar Temple.

The temple is within a high-walled enclosure, at the core of which are the two sanctums for Meenakshi and Sundareshwar surrounded by several smaller shrines and grand pillared halls.

Historical Significance
Historical evidence provides a hint that the Temple dated back to the early A.D when the Temple was completely destroyed due to the Islamic invasion, thanks to the conqueror Malikkapur’s ideals and values who believed in destructing and destroying the religious and sacred pilgrims of others. Therefore, the invaders destroyed most of the culture and traditional artefacts.

The temple was restored to it’s pristine glory when the Hindu Kings came back to power in Madurai. The Temple observed a complete renovation and thus, started the beginning of a new era with Thirugnanasambandar , the Hindu Saint, who has referred to the magnificent Temple in his poems often.

The Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple is now under the administration of HR and CE of Tamil Nadu.

The Deity
According to the Hindu Legend, it is believed that the Meenakshi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati or Meenakshi who one fine night appeared in the dream of second Pandya king Malayadwaja Pandya and his wife, Kanchanamalai. She appeared out of the holy fire of Putra Kameshti Yagna, performed by the King. It was also told that the girl who arose from the fire had three breasts when suddenly, there was a voice from the above indicating the King not be afraid of her abnormality; the extra breast would soon disappear once the girl meets her future husband. Therefore, the king named her “Tadaatagai”, who was carefully trained in all the 64 Sastras or fields of science.

Meenakshi Temple, unlike most of the Temples in the South India, has been named after the legendary Lord Shiva, Meenakshi is considered to be an avatar of Goddess Parvati or consort of Shiva. The name has been derived from Mina meaning fish and aksi meaning eyes. Therefore, it literally defines the lady figurine with fish eyes.

As the time for Tadaatagai’s coronation came, the moment she looked at Lord Shiva, she bowed her head due to shyness and her third breast vanished immediately. Tadaatagai realized ShivaShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ...
was her destined and divine husband and that she was an incarnation of Parvati.

Amazing Architecture
The breathtaking architecture of the Meenakshi Temple is adorned with fort-like walls pierced with lofty towers, visible at quite a distance. It covers an area of 64,000 squares feet surrounded by Aadi, Chittrai, Maasi and Velli streets. The towers or Gopurams adorn the temple and can be seen from a distance. There are as many as 12 Gopurams with the 4 outer towers escalated at over 160 feet. The thousand pillared hall also marks significance in the Temple with the phenomenal structural work on the pillars, beyond comparison.
