Balaji Temple, Mehandipur – A Temple to Expel the Evil

Mehandipur Balaji Temple is situated in Dausa in the Karauli district of Rajasthan. It is one of the most famous temples of India and is dedicated to Balaji, one of the many names of Hanuman. is celebrated here. The temple has three chief deities namely, Balaji, Pret Raj and Bhairav, who are supposed to protect their devotees from all evil. Numerous devotees visit the temple everyday with the hope to give a new beginning to their life and resolving issues of the past.

About the Temple

A very prominent legend associated with the temple is that around thousand years ago Balaji and Pret Raj appeared here from the Aravali hills. The temple has four chambers. The first two chambers have idols of Balaji and BhairavBhairavBhairav
Also known as Kala Bhairava, Bhairava is the manifestation of Lord Shiva...
and here the devotees are supposed to throw black balls into the fire which is supposed to ward off evil spirits from them. The third and fourth chambers are for those who are believed to be under evil spirits or black magic and. They are supposed to pray to Pret Raj. There are some gruesome and horrific activities associated with the temple and it is advised to the people to follow some rules before entering the premises. For instance, people bang their heads against pillars, put hot water over their bodies and try to inflict physical pain on themselves as such rituals and practices are supposed to free them from the grasp of anything evil. It also symbolizes the beliefs of devotees. According to them by inflicting pain on themselves they can cleanse their soul and perform penance for all the evils they have done. However, the temple is also associated with many benevolent activities such as charity, providing food to the poor, supplying fodder and water for cows and other stray animals etc.

Rituals and Beliefs

The temple is considered to be a very powerful place and is believed to eliminate any kind of trouble which is beyond medical remedies. The most general practice of the temple is exorcism in which those affected are required to worship the deities, read religious and Vedic texts, follow strict rules and have simple vegetarian diet. Many scientific researchers, scholars and psychiatrists from all over the world had visited the temple and tried to study the methodologies of the place. They have not been able to provide a clear cut scientific explanation for the same. Nevertheless, the most ardent devotees believe that Balaji has immense supernatural powers and cure for any disease or problem.

Hanuman is regarded as one of the most popular deities of the Hindus. He is regarded as a very powerful deity who is able to fight and protect his devotees from evil spirits and black magic. Pret Raj is also known as the king of spirits and is believed to hold meetings with spirits in his court and punish the ones who are found to be guilty, thus, helping the devotees to get rid of them. and is considered the destroyer of evil. The temple has a very important place in the hearts of the people. As such the temple is always very crowded and the general activities of the temple are carried out throughout the day. The festivals of Holi, Hanuman Jayanti and Dussehra are regarded as the most important and auspicious days for the devotees and worshippers to visit the temple and offer their prayers to Balaji.
