According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)..., built by the Mataram Kingdom, rulers of Central Java and defeaters of the Sailendra Dynasty. According to the legend, Rakai Pikatan, the Hindu Prince of Sanjaya Dynasty, got married into the Sailendra Dynasty, and therefore, built many temples in the Prambanan Archaeological Park in the 8th Century AD. In it’s original forms, there were many such temples constructed which were on the lines of Perwara. These temples were then; expanded by the successors of the Mataram Kingdom but the
Prambanan Temple remained a significant icon and the masterpiece because all the major rituals and sacrifices were made here. Though, after some time the Mataram Kings shifted to the Central Java in the 10th Century and the land was abandoned in the 16th Century due to adverse earthquake.
Also, there is another legend that follows the beautiful but unrequited love story of Roro Jongrangg and Bandung Bondowoso. It is believed that the former detested the latter because he killed her father and therefore cheated on him, which compelled Bondowoso to built a slender virgin statue of the pretty woman.
