About Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple

Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple is one of the famous Balinese Sea Temples. It is regarded as one of the nine directional temples, which is believed to protect from the evil spirits. It is situated in the southern Bali peninsula, on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above sea level. It is one of the Sad Kahyangan and forms one of most important temples in Bali. The name ‘Luhur’ means ‘something of divine origin’, ‘ulu’ means land’s end and ‘watu’ means land’s end.
 

The inner sanctum of the pura (temple) is perched at the the edge of a steep cliffs which tower over Bali’s legendary surf breaks at the south. Most travelers enjoy the view of this temple from two different vantage points, from both northern and southern part of the area.
 

Historical Significance
As one of the key nine directional temples of Bali, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is meant to protect Bali against the evil. It is expanded in the 11th Century by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan. Later another sage from East Java, Dnag Hyang Nirartha is credited to have construct the padmasana shrines and claimed to have attained moksha here.
 

The temple is perched at a staggeringly steep cliff as tall as 70 m over the roaring Indian ocean waves.
 

The deity
Behind the main pagoda of Pura Uluwatu's small inner sanctum, a limestone statue of a Brahman priest surveys the Indian Ocean-it is said the statue represents the founding priest Dwijendra. Another shrine within the complex represents the boat on which Dwijendra traveled from, then, Hindu Java. According to legend he arrived at Pura Peti Tenget, north of Kuta.
The temple is built at the edge of the 70m high cliff or rock projecting into the sea. In folklore, this rock is said to be the part of Deni Dawu’s barque.
 

Monkeys Tradition
The temple inhabited monkeys , who are notorious for snatching the tourist’s belongings. They can be usually persuaded for the trade of fruits, but are often indulged in stealing in between. Also, it is advised to beaware of the priests who have trained the monkeys over a gradual period of time.
 

Location: The Uluwatu Temple is situated at the high cliff rock in the souther Bali pensinsula.
 

Built in: The temple was built by Eastern Java sage, Dang Hyang Niratha in the 11th Century.
 

Dedicated to: The temple is dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa as Rudra but regarded as a famous Sea Balinese and Hindu temple.

  • Uluwatu Beach – well known among surfing enthusiasts as there are good surf spots like Uluwatu, Dreamland and Padang-padang.
  • Tirtha Wedding Chapel – many people choose to marry here in Bukit Peninsula, Bali as the stunning and modern chapel comes with a romantic beach front. Numerous resorts offer wedding package to here.


Fees
The entrance fees for the temple is 50,000 Rp. And the sarongs are also available at rent. Guide is not necessary
 

Travel Recommendations:
All the travellers recommend to behold the splendid sunset sight at Puru Ulawutu. Also, it is important to maintain caution from monkeys and keep your little belongings like mobile, sunglasses and camera in the pocket at all time. Kecak Dance is one of the secatcular and peculiar attraction which must be attended by the tourists at least once.
