About Sabarimala Temple

Since the time immemorial, the ancient land of Kerala has been the pious land for heaven seekers in the midst of eternal truth. But, for the rest of the people, is it the congregation for pilgrims and devotees with big and small temples. The most important Hindu pilgrim site resides in the minuscule South Indian state, Sabarimala. The Hindu pilgrimage is located at scenic Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghat ranges of the Pathanamthitta District, Perunad grama panchayat in Kerala.

Historical Significance
Lord Ayyappa, the presiding deity of the much coveted Sabarimala Temple was known as Ayyan belonged to the Vellalar Kulum, was the Army Chief of the Pandalam Royal family. He stayed with his relative, Perisseri Pillai of Erumeli, Kottayam Dist, Kerala about ten generations ago.

Udayanan was the devilish man who tried to demolish the ages old Sastha temple in the Pathanamthitta district, but Ayyan was courageous enough to find the demon himself. During the tiff, AyyappaAyyappaAyyappa

got killed and his uncle, Perisseri Pillai constructed ‘Kochampalan' - an old small Sastha temple - at Erumeli. In  the loving memory of Ayyappa, people began considering him to be synonymous with Lord Sastha and thus, he is worshipped even today.

The Deity
The presiding deity of the Sabarimala Temple is Lord Sastha/Ayyappa/Ayyanar, one of the most  venerated deities in the Hindu religion. Every year, thousands of devotees irrespective of caste, creed or race visit here to worship Lord Ayyapan to (or “intending to”) absolve their sins and create harmony in the fellowmen. True to the Hindu philosophy of ‘thathvamasi', devotees commune to Lord Ayyappan directly, without any intermediaries.

Those who decide to go to Sabarimala need to observe strict celibacy. The procession of  Malikappurathamma to Saramkuthy and her return without any exuberance shows one the patience, endurance and mental strength a man can achieve. The ghee-filled coconuts in the blazing fire hearth symbolize the burn off of one's selfishness. A bath in river Pampa stands for driving away the sins one committed in his life.

Humanity scores on a Myth of debarring women
Women are not allowed to enter in the Sabarimala Temple and observe the processions and rituals taking place because it is believed that women are not pure enough to worship Lord Ayyappan, who ironically, believes in the equality of all the religions and castes.  Women are not allowed inside the temple after they attain puberty although, post-menopausal, they are allowed to enter.

A temple running on mere blind beliefs regarding the ‘purity test' of a woman must not be conceded and therefore, it is important to look beyond the obvious and welcome all the races equally to worship the Lord Ayyappan.

Sabarimala Temple Story

The age old myth followed and believed by the people is related to the ladylove of Lord Ayyappa. The woman was enchanted by the beauty and charm whips of the divine almighty who was cursed to be killed by the incarnation of Lord VishnuVishnuVishnu

. This was an ideal representation of Lord Ayyappa, who therefore, went to kill the woman but instead returned to Sabarimala asking the lady to wait for him at MALIKAPURATHAMMA, Kerala. Entangled and occupied with all the worldy affairs and addressing the issues of devotees, Lord Ayyappa forgot about her and therefore, the entry of women is debarred in the temple to keep any kind of distractions at bay. The lady is said to be still waiting and meditating in search for him.
