Samarlakota Temple is one of the five Pancharama Kshetras dedicated to Lord Shiva. Bhimeswara Swamy Temple at Samalkot has located around 12 km from Kakinada and 52 km from Rajahmundry. The temple is known as Kumararama as Kumara, the son of ShivaShivaShiva

during the war with Tarakasura, He was a powerful demon who was fathered by Vajranaka. He was also known as Taraka and was always able to defeat Gods in wars. The heaven was almost on the verge of collapse. No one was able to stop him therefore all the Gods wanted Shiva to end him. Shiva was in extreme meditation and thus no one dared to disturb him. The Gods approached Kamadeva and him to create an untimely spring and break his mediation with the help of an arrow of lust. Ultimately it was Kartikeya who killed the demon as Shiva was extremely furious due to the act of Kamadeva. established the Lord Bhimeswara Swamy. Kumara is one among the numerous names of Kartik or Muruga.

This temple was built in Dravidian style during the end of the 9th century AD by Eastern King Chalukya Bhima. Hence, the name is Bhimeswara.

The temple has a mandapam that is supported by 100 pillars and is of great architectural importance.

The temple has an Ekasila NandiNandiNandi
Nandi is one of the most iconic and famous characters of Hindu mythology. He is the vehicle of Shiva and also the gatekeeper of the abode of Shiva and Parvati.

A 16-feet limestone Shivling is installed in the sanctum sanctorum, which is two stories. The Shivling rises from the pedestal on the ground floor and enters the second floor where the Rudrabhaga is worshiped.

Mother Goddess Shakti worshiped in the shrine is known as Bala Tripura Sundari.

The architecture style of the temple is much similar to Draksharamam Temple.

The temple is circled by two prakara walls built of sandstones. The outer prakara wall is penetrated by gopura - entrance on all the four sides. The main entry to the temple is called Surya Dwaram. The four gopura – dvaras have Ardha – mandapas on either side. The inner enclosure wall is divided horizontally into two sections separated by a cornice. It has a two-storeyed pillared mandapa running all the inner side. Pushkarini lake can be seen here.

 

Festivals On Kumararama Bhimesvara Temple


During November–December (Karthika and Margashira) months daily Abhisheka is carried out. There will be Kalyana Mahotsav during February–March (Magha Bahula Ekadashi day) time. Maha Shivaratri grand celebration is very popular in Temple. 

The most important festivals observed here are Mondays in Kartik month, Divine  marriage (Brahmotsavam) on BhishmaBhishmaBhishma

Morning Darshan The term means the vision of the divinetime is 6 AM to 12:00 PM
Evening darshan time is from 4 PM to around 8 PM

 

 

How to reach Kumararama Temple Samarlakota


Samalkot is 40 km from Annavaram, 15 km from Kakinada, 49 km from Rajahmundry, and 125 km from Visakhapatnam.

By Train
The nearest railway station is Vijayawada-Howrah broad gauge railway line of South – Central Railway.

By Airport
The nearest airport is at Rajahmundry, but not many flights stop by here, unlike Visakhapatnam where one has a lot of options.

By Bus
The nearest Roadways station is Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), Kakinada Depot. Also, transport department offers a travel package which covers all the 5 Pancharamas (Amaravathi, Bhimavaram, Palakollu, Draksharama & Samalkota). The journey starts at 8.00PM every Sunday and ends at 8.00P.M next day covering 700 km approximately.
