About Shani Shingnapur Temple

Shani Shingnapur is a popular small town situated at an approximate distance of 35km from the city of Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. The village holds a significant position because of the traditional ShaniShaniShani

Temple located here. Thousands of tourists and pilgrims travel miles to take a glimpse of the guardian deity of Shingnapur village.

Historic Significance
The ages long history concerning the history of Lord Shani is sure to cast a spell on it’s devotees. The story of worshipping Shani has been passed through generations by the word of mouth and it goes like this; When the Shepherd noticed a black rock, he pointed a rod towards it and, thus, the rock started bleeding. On seeing this, the Shepherds were surprised, and the villagers gathered around the rock to observe the miracle. On that particular night, the most pious and devoted of the Shephards had a dream of Lord Shanaishwara who unraveled the mystery of the black rock and claimed it to be his Swaymbhu form. The Shephard questioned him if he needed a temple. To this, Lord Shanishwara replied the Temple is for the weak, he wanted to be kept under the open sky without a roof. Lord also asked the Shephard to worship daily the Swayambhu and perform Tailabhiksha every Saturday. Finally, the former assured the latter about safety from dacoits or burglars in the village and the rest remains history.
To this day, the villagers live peacefully in their door less and lockless homes because of their great devotion and belief in the Shani, the Guardian deity of Shingnapur. Due to the fearsome manifestation of Lord Shani, there are no doors or locks in the homes of villagers and according to sources, there have been very negligible crimes in the suburb. None of the structure, post office, huts, shops or even banks operate without the locks and doors.

Main Festivals
The village celebrates the birthday of Shani, Shani Jayanti with pomp and show. The palanquin procession of Lord Shani is held during the fair. Amavasya is regarded as the most auspicious day to appease Lord Shani and hence, thousands of pilgrims and devotees flock to the temple and attend the fair. Amavasya, if falls on Saturdays is considered to be the ‘it-thing’ for the devotees who bathe Lord Shani with tons of oil and water, offer flowers and udid to the deity.

The Secret of Door-less and Lockless homes
Once a humble affair, but now the large and extensive property of the village marks a significant change as the donations run in lakhs and yet, the people are unwilling to keep their home door-less and lockless for the unfathomable faith in Lord Shani, the Guardian Deity. Also, the United Cooperation Bank opened a new branch in the village for the track record to be fair and positive. The bank runs without a lock but keeping the security of the money and finances of account holders, it is essential to maintain decorum and keep the law of village in place. The bank functions on a remote controlled electromagnetic lock thereby keeping the monetary assets safe and secure. It is a belief in the village that if the residents try to install a frame on the entrance or any such activity is done, he is more likely to face an accident or loss or inevitable circumstances which can hamper the life of his family. Therefore, the village has around 5000 odd residents staying in homes with empty door frames at the threshold.
