About Virupaksha Temple

Virupaksha Temple is located on the south banks of the River Tunghabadra in Hampi, Karnataka. Hampi is believed to be the seat of Vijayanagara empire built during 1336-1570A.D. The oldest Temple is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimage for the followers and devotees of Lord Shiva. The Temple has been listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
 

History
The Temple’s history dates back to the 7th Century. There were ancient inscriptions found inside the Temple referring to Lord ShivaShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ...
dating back to the 9th and 10th Century. Originally, it was only a small shrine but lately got renovated by the rulers of Vijayanagara Empire who changed the Temple to a complex. In the middle of the 14th century under the rule of Vijayanagara Empire, there was a rapid mushrooming of native art and culture.
 

After the invasion of the Mughals who defeated the native rulers, and took over the large empire brought significant changes to the Temple. In the 19th Century, Gopuras and ceiling paintings were added.
 

Architecture
The nine-tiered ancientbuilding comprises of three antechambers, a sanctum, an open pillared hall and a pillared hall. The beautiful nine-tiered gateway stands tallest amongst all, escalated at a height of 50m and is proportionally constructed. The base of stone is two tiered, and the superstructure is made of bricks.
 

The central pillar is beautifully ornate and was built by the famous Vijayanagara Emperor Krishnadevaraya . The hall was believed to be built by the Emperor in 1510A.D. The stone inscriptions provide a detailed account of the Emperor’s contribution to the Temple.
 

Temple Festivals
The Temple attracts a huge crowd during the month of February for the marriage and betrothal ceremonies of Virupaksha and Pampa.
 

Location: Virupaksha Temple is located on the banks of the River Tungabhadra in Hampi, Karnataka.
 

Built In: Virupaksha Temple is the oldest Temple dating back to the 8th Century and is believed to be built by the rulers of Vijayanagara Empire.
 

Dedicated To: The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered to be one of the most sacred pilgrims of the Shiva.
 

Alternate Names: The Virupaksha Temple is also known as Pampapati Temple.
 

Attraction: The Temple observes a grand celebration in the month of February to mark the marriage and betrothal ceremonies of Virupaksha and Pampa.
