and his consort Rakhumai. It is the most popular visited temple in Maharashtra. The Warkaris start parade from their houses to the temple of Pandharpur in groups called Dindi to reach on Aashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi. Devotees take a dip in the holy river Chandrabhaga on whose banks Pandharpur resides is believed to wash all sins. All the devotees are allowed to touch the feet of the idol of Vithoba. In May 2014, the Vithoba Rukmini Temple became the first temple to allow women and people from backward classes as priests.


History of Vitthal Temple Pandharpur 

As per as Hindu methodology, the Pandharpur temple complex has been renovated a number of times. As per these records, one of the royal rulers of the Shaliwahana Dynasty renovated Pandharpur in 83 A.D. The tradition of the Paduka parade (walking on barefoot) with Palkhi of the idols is said to have started in 1296 A.D

Vithoba's history begins with a consideration of the dating of the chief temple at Pandharpur, which is considered to be the earliest Vithoba temple. The oldest part of the temple built in the Yadava period of the 12th and 13th century. Most of the temple is consider to have been built in the 17th century, though addition to the temple has never ceased.


Legends of Vitthal temple Pandharpur

According to the Hindu methodology, once open a time there was once a devoted son Pundalik. He takes care of his father Janudev and his mother Satyavati. But things changed when Pundalik got married. He started ill-treating and tired of his tyranny, the parents decided to go to Kashi or Varanasi. People believe that who died in Kashi got salvation from the cycle of birth and death. This is still believed today and many people move there when they feel their end is near.

For his parent's decision, Pundalik and his wife decided to join them. But his tyranny continued, his old parents walk throughout his journey while he and his wife rode on a horse. On the way of his long journey, they have decided to stay few days in Sage Kukkutswami monastery.  


That night, Pundalik saw a group of young women dressed in dirty clothes and enters the sage's monastery. Womens did cleaning the floor and washed the Sage clothes. After that, they entered the prayer room and after some time they came out but their clothes were clean and they disappeared. Pundalik wasn't distrustful seeing this but rather he felt at peace.

He decided to talk to the women. "Who are you all?"

They said, "We are GangaGangaGanga
According to Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu in one of....
, Yamuna and all the holy rivers of India. Devotees take a bath and wipe away their sins. People take off their impurity of their mind, body and souls in the holy river. That's why you see our clothes in such muddy condition. "Pundalik was amazed at their answer. "But you are the biggest sinner of all because of the way you treat your parents."

He realized his mistake and served his parents well and looked after all their needs and vantage. Pundalik's sincere devotion towards his parents, Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased and left his Vaikuntha Lok to bless Pundalik.

He asked Lord Vishnu that he should remain on earth and bless all his devotees. His wish was accepted and the Lord remained behind and is known as Vithoba or the Lord who stands on a brick. This form of the Lord is Swayambhu which means that his idol has not been carved but it came into existence on its own. He is accompanied by his consort Rakhumai or Rukmini.


Vitthal Temple Pandharpur Events and Festivals

Every Wednesday and Ekadashi day are considered as an auspicious day of the month. Pandharpur hosts four Yatras in a year. Aashadhi Yatra, Kartiki, Magh and Chaitra Ekadashi have celebrated annually and it thus attracts millions of visitors to Pandharpur. Here, the palanquins (Palkhi or doolie) of various saints from different places come together at Wakhri, 5 km away from Pandharpur. Then after, the pilgrims take holy bath in Bhima river and then devotees stand in 3km to 5 km long queues  in order to take Lord Vitthala Darshana. The Temple also celebrates Gudi Padwa, Ram-Navami, Dussehra and Deepavali It is also known as the festival of lights and is celebrated on the return of Lord Rama back to his abode, Ayodhyafestivals. The most important festivals of Vithoba Temple are held on Shayani Ekadashi in the month of Ashadha, and Prabodhini Ekadashi in the month of Kartik.
